CINEMA ARTS FESTIVAL // HOUSTON

Share
Take a peek at our hottest picks for this years Cinema Art Festival:

"Welcome to the shadowy world of the street are subculture."
A production of Shoot. Edit. Sleep. in collaboration with Stone Kanyon Productions and Aerosol Warfare.

"Under the able baton of late, legendary Houston music educator Dr. Conrad Johnson, Kashmere High School's band program became a force to be reckoned with in the '60s and '70s. Augmenting the traditional symphonic repertoire with everything from jazz to James Brown, the Kashmere Stage Band cleaned up at virtually every regional, state and national contest it entered. The bands also released several albums that were originally intended as fund-raisers but became highly sought-after collectibles and sampling gold mines for adventurous DJs such as Houston-born Premier of Gang Starr. Dozens of KSB alumni went on to become professional musicians and music educators in their own right." (Chris Gray, Houston Press)

Check out the trailer below as the director explains how the music and arts directly correlates to higher grades and community pride.

Thunder Soul will be screened at Discovery Green followed by a performance by Kashmere Reunion stage Band. This event is free to the public.

CHIP THA RIPPER // PHOTOS & INTERVIEW // GIFT RAPS TOUR

Share

Friday night was an all-around good time.  Chip Tha Ripper came through to Fitzgerald's for his Gift Raps tour and Hood Socialite was able to get up close and personal for an amazing photo-op and a brief interview.  The quality of the show was everything that I had expected and more, I was both surprised and very pleased with the following that he has here in Houston.  Like I said, the conversation was very quick, but we discussed his travels, what he likes about Texas, what to expect from him in the near future, and the zodiac.

HoodSocialite: How is Texas treating you?
Chip: Good, very good... I love the weather here.
HoodSocialite: How was College Station last night?
Chip: It was dope, we were right across the street from the campus and the turnout was very good.
HoodSocialite: What have you been listening to while on tour?
Chip: Everything; I usually just put my iPod on shuffle.
HoodSocialite: When is your birthday?
Chip: October 20th...
HoodSocialite: Libra?
Chip: Yup
HoodSocialite: Lil' Wayne is also a Libra, as well as Eminem, John Lennon, Gandhi... don't ask me how I know this...
Chip: Really? No way..
HoodSocialite: So, what bullshit-free advice would you give to someone following their dreams?  In the entertainment industry specifically?
Chip: When you feel like losing hope, when people doubt you, kick that shit into 3rd gear.
HoodSocialite: What can we expect from you in the near future?
Chip: Gift Raps.  Coming soon.
HoodSocialite: And what can we expect to hear on Gift Raps?
Chip: Fat raps.  Just fat raps.

THE COCKER SPANIELS @ SUPER HAPPY FUN LAND // 08.06.2010 (HOUSTON)

Share
I cant wait to hear "The Cocker Spaniels" live @ Super Happy Fun Land for several reasons.

#1. I've been waiting for a chance for check out this place. I found out after the fact when DJ Jazzy Jeff rocked it there and a certain fashion event that went down on said premises was also a missed opportunity, so I'm due to see what this place is all about.

#2. I found Sean Padilla on Twitter (a place where I find so many gems) and he just seems like such a genuine and talented artist. He works a fulltime job doing something I haven't really figured out yet, but I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoy his sporatic angry work rants. Follow him on Twitter. Thank me later.

#3. He bakes cookies on the side to support his music which is so dope to me for some reason. I'm gonna have to see what those snickerdoodles are talking about, too. It's on my to-do list to place my order on Friday.

He's his own manager, agent, publicist, and street team and he is making extremely beautiful and authentic music, in my humble opinon. Gotta love that or at the very least respect it. His influences are The Beattles, Prince, Jimmy Hendricks, and Dilla among others and the way everything comes together is pretty awesome and unique. Check out a live interview and performance of Sean Padilla of The Cocker Spaniels on 90.1 FM (http://www.kpft.org/) this Friday at 1:00 P.M.

SOCIALITE EXCLUSIVE: HIP HOP FOR HIV @ RELIANT CENTER (PICS)

Share

The crowd was insane this past Friday night at the Hip Hop 4 HIV concert! This year’s concert featured performances from artists including Bun B, Lloyd Banks, Z-Ro, Plies, Paul Wall, The Party Boyz, Papareu, and Just Brittany. The energy was intense and excited fans hung over the barriers, reciting songs word for word, as those remaining in the crowd of threw up the "H" with pride as some of the hottest acts from Houston and around the country made their way up to the stage. Despite a 5 foot barrier and the presence of Houston police, there were several small altercations that broke out, due to sheer excitement, as fans tried to get a better view of the artists. Considering the fact that the demographic were ages 14-20, these types of issues are to be expected and anticipated and the staff at Reliant Center did a great job of keeping order and preserving the integrity of the event. With that being said, Hood Socialite braved the crowd and enjoyed VIP/Backstage Access to get YOU exclusive coverage!!

SOCIALITE EXCLUSIVE: KE$HA @ HOUSE OF BLUES 7/26/2010 (PICS)

Share
Whether you're a fan of Ke$ha or not, there is no denying the fact that she puts on a show for her fans. Houston based website DO713 graciously hooked Hood Socialite up with some free tickets to check her out at the House of Blues this past Tuesday, via Twitter, so we headed out to see what the chick had to offer live. Between the copious amounts of estrogen and hair spray in the venue, We WERE able to observe all of the die-hard, glitter faced and mostly drunk Ke$ha fans (girls and guys) in action. Filled with teenage angst and alot of beer, Ke$ha's fans really feel as though they have an unexplainable super-connection with her... or maybe the connection they have is with her songs, which are mostly about things like partying at rich guys houses and brushing her teeth with Jack Daniels after waking up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy. The performance, costumes, props, etc. were all completely outrageous and strange- that seems to be what the "Ke$ha-heads" love about her, and she certainly delivers just that. We were surprised that she played a few instruments and honestly, we have alot more respect for Ke$ha after this performance.  Even if you're not a fan of her music, she gets props from us for being a strategic and wise performer; she puts it on for her fans all the way.  Don't count Ke$ha out.  She'll be back.

(Oh yeah, some other chick named Lady GaGa blazed through town too. Wanna know where and how she kicked it during her time in the H? Click HERE.)

Have Hood Socialite at YOUR next event! Contact us @ hoodsocialite@gmail.com and we can make it happen. Check out more "Artography" by our very own Weishi after the jump.

SOCIALITE SPOTLIGHT: 3RD ANNUALTRAE DAY // JULY 22, 2010 // HOUSTON, TEXAS

Share

Lately, controversy seems to surround Trae. This year had been particularly intense for the native Houston rapper due to issues that ocurred with a local radio station personality. The effect of this "beef" (which can be read about here and here) has been a ban from certain stations which could have, no doubt, negatively impacted any other artist making strides to become a house hold name. That is, unless your name is Trae the Truth.

Even in the midst of all the negativity, rumors, and gossip, Trae has continued to march forward. He is currently nominated as one of Sucker Free's Breakthrough MC's of the year and after many minor set backs, this Thursday he will be hosting the 3rd anuual Trae Day event @ Northwest Mall in Houston, TX. Peep the details after the break.

Janelle Monae came through Cactus Music on Sunday for an up close and personal meet and greet event before opening for Erkah Badu at the Verizon Center later that evening. She signed autographs, mingled and giggled with fans, and gave one hell of an acoustic performance of Tight Rope and Cold War that displayed her awesome range and intense passion for her chosen life path. Eventhough she looked cute as a button, you have to wonder how many tuxedos she has in her closet because her formal wear swag is stupendous. B.O.B - THE ADVENTURES OF BOBBY RAY | THE HOUSE OF BLUES (HOUSTON)

Share

As hip-hop continues to grow and expand its parameters, there is an artist from Atlanta taking the genre to a new ground-breaking level. If you are thinking T.I., guess again. Andre 3000? Big Boi? Nice try, but B.o.B ( or Bobby Ray) is a product of all of those aforementioned emcees, while also drawing from rock and pop music to form a juxtaposition of sounds unique to the game.

The Chronicle's Mike Damante recently spoke to B.o.B while the rapper is currently on tour with Lupe Fiasco, the pair plays the House of Blues on Monday.

CHRON: What inspires you think outside the box of conventional hip-hop?

B.O.B : Honestly, just allowing myself to be me and not trying to fit into the box. I think it is actually harder to fit into the box then it is just to be yourself for some reason.

CHRON: You've had many quality mix tapes full of songs that could have easily been radio hits, so how does it feel to have Nothing On You be such a huge single?

B.O.B: I didn't think it would be as big of a radio hit as it is now. The main thing is where I go from here. You have to understand you really have to keep your ambition in mind and be really strong because there are so much other contenders that could arrive and steer you way off course and make your plans for you.

CHRON: On your upcoming album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, you have a track called Airplanes that features Hayley Williams from the band Paramore singing the hook and the song Magic features Rivers Cuomo from Weezer. Can you elaborate on these collaborations?

B.O.B : I'm a huge, huge rock fan. I really wanted to crossover boundaries with the album and really show everyone that music is universal and doesn't have to fit into a format.

CHRON: There are a lot of instruments like piano and guitars on your album and past mix tapes. How involved are you in the instrumentation and production process?

B.O.B: I produce most of my stuff, but what I picked for the album was not most of my stuff. The overall album, the purpose of it, was to be this one melting pot ( of sounds).

CHRON: On the track Airplanes Part II, you have Eminem on the song. How did it feel to have one of your heroes appear on your debut album?

B.O.B : There was definitely a gratitude level that was through the roof. For Eminem to do that, he didn't have to.

CHRON: At the 2009 SXSW festival you performed a freestyle called Patron and Swag that attacked the trends of hip-hop at the time. Do you think yourself and artists like Kid Cudi and Wale are ushering in a new wave of hip-hop?

B.O.B: I feel like each one of us our ushering in our own sounds.

The Adventures of Bobby Ray comes out this Tuesday, April 27 via Atlantic Records. B.o.B will be performing with Lupe Fiasco 8 p.m. Monday night April 26 at the House of Blues.

"IN LOVE WITH MY MONEY TOUR" W/ PAUL WALL AND CHAMILLIONAIRE @ HOUSE OF BLUES 4/23/2010 (HOUSTON)

Share

Paul Wall and Chamillionaire have for the most part completed their "In Love With The Money Tour" and are back in Houston gearing up for the final show @ the House of Blues on April 23rd. This might be one of the most anticipated concerts of the year considering the duo's shaky past. After a seven year hiatus, with both men having respectable solo careers, the stars have once again aligned and Paul Wall and Chamillionaire were able to come  together, squash the drama, and get back to business. The tour consisted mostly of west coast and mid west venues with these boys selling out shows in Vegas, San Francisco, and even Fargo, Nd....

Being an urbanite, u tend to forget that real people live in places like Fargo, let alone are jamming Texas Hip Hop. If a picture is worth a thousand words then it looks they they made the right decision by going on this reunion tour. Even though I'm pretty impressed, I can't say that I'm surprised. Connoisseurs of the duo's sound never wanted to see them part ways in the first place. Their styles compliment each other in a way that is hard to duplicate and going solo exposed a lot of weaknesses and kinks, in regard to both rappers, that needed to be worked out and overcome. Regardless, both hustled their way to the top of their own respective mountains and hopefully one day will take all that drama, experience, blood, sweat, and tears and pour it into a new album. Mark my words, combine that with a European tour and some of that good ol juke joint grind and they would have a multi platinum winner folks.

Until then, in real life Chamillionaire will be releasing VENOM on June 22nd and Paul Wall's new single "IM ON PATRON"  will be the first off  THE HEART OF A CHAMPION dropping this summer.

SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO @GU_HEFFNER FOR LETTING ME SNATCH UP THESE PICS FROM HIS TWITTER PAGE.  :)

UPDATE: I know this ish is random but check out this fight @ whataburger that Paul Wall caught on camera when he touched back down in Houston after the tour. For those that dont know Whataburger, is a 24 fast food chain based out of Texas that is sooo good. Everything is always fresh and hot, the chicken strips are banging, and the milkshakes brings the boys to the yard. Yummy!! Im gonna eat Whataburger for lunch today now. :)

KIDZ IN THE HALL are headlining the concert and have been a quiet storm brewing underground for some time now. At first glance, this might be a group that I wouldve initially looked over but I peeped that they had a song with Marsha Ambrosius, and since I believe an angel gets their wings everytime she opens her mouth to sing, I decided to give it listen and Ive been a loyal fan ever since.

I am in LOVE with the sound, the lyrics, the delivery... this is that new millienium ish that real hip hop heads have been waiting for. Houston "sound" has turned a sharp corner and in my opionion, H.I.S.D. will play a vital role in "schooling" people of other regions that might have thought the game was over considering we have lost two major influences in Underground Music with the deaths of Dj Screw and Pimp C.
